Alê Souto

23rd part of the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon (concept): 1.112 kilometers in 18:13 minutes – completed on Friday, April 15th 2016, in Realengo (overall map). The artist Alê Souto (*1973) lives in Realengo (more about him).

Statement

Why did you choose this part to represent Rio de Janeiro at the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon?

I chose this segment because I live in this town quarter. I was born and grew up here. We just come from the Realengo railway station where thousands of workers flock in every day to the centre to give their working energy. We passed the Avenida Santa Cruz where the quarter came into being, and also the street, which goes all the way to Santa Cruz and connects Rio with Sepetiba. We passed the Colégio Pedro II, an important school-establishment. A little further we passed the military barracks where Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso served a sentence during the dictatorship. I think this segment has a big symbolic meaning. Now we are on the beloved site of Realengo, a town quarter which continues the tradition of suburbian bars, we are in one of the bars that still has good quality, decoration and offers these delicacies. Realengo is an important town quarter and I wanted to show to you what it is like for us. It is my invitation to everybody to get to know Realengo: a really nice place, just like any other touristic place or the beach. Thank you for taking part.

Enjoying Rio

Your favourite art place?
I see art everywhere, in the spontaneously painted pictures of simple people and the European sculptures on the places in town. Since its existence, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil has brought important exhibitions to Rio, it is my favorite place.

Your favourite shop in Rio?
I like the shop La Cucaracha in Ipanema best, because of the variety of products, exhibitions and the underground literature.

Your favourite restaurant in Rio – and what should you order there?
I like the restaurant Braseirinho da Glória and the barbecued rib with broccoli rice and sauté potatoes.
