32^nd part of the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon (concept): 0.858 kilometers in 8:54 minutes – completed on Monday, April 18^th 2016, in the quarter Urca (overall map). The photographer Luiz Garrido lives in Rio de Janeiro (more about him).

Why did you choose this part to represent Rio de Janeiro at the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon?

Because my life began here. I was born here in this quarter which today is rather a small town within Rio de Janeiro, where you have such a nice view, with all these ships. I also had such a sailboat, a dream. Behind you there is the Sugarloaf, and the Corcovado. And there is a time which has passed: behind us was the Cassino da Urca, a casino with miraculous shows of artists like Ângela Maria and other stars of the past, a big casino where gambling was done. I lived in this dream, in this golden time, in this Rio which does not exist anymore. I could climb a rock and jump into the water, could catch sea horses, later I made pendants from the sea horses and sold them to my neighbours. This was the beginning of my life. I miss it very much, it had affection for me. And there is nothing of this any more, it is really over. What a pity. The water isn´t any more, there is no Cassino any more. The ships are still there. Also the Corcovado. Luckily the Corcovado is still there! But I miss the time, and today Rio would be different if it still were as it was. It would be another Rio with little violence. At that time there was no violence. I went here on the street, my house had no locker, maybe we lived in another world. In another Rio which the people have done away with. Those who manage Rio de Janeiro. There is the sea, the mountains 5 minutes away, you have everything here. You have the possibility to leave with your ship, or to let your ship here, but this is all over. Really a pity!

Restaurant Guimas, Rua José Roberto Macedo Soares, 5 – Gávea. Beside good food the best is a Lime-Caipirinha, to sit down, to have a conversation and to meet friends.
