40th part of the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon (concept): 0.216 kilometers in 4:49 minutes – completed on Wednesday, April 20th 2016, in the quarter São Cristovão (overall map). The cultural manager Mana Pontez lives in Rio de Janeiro (more about her).
Why did you choose this part to represent Rio de Janeiro at the First Rio City Aesthetic Marathon?
I chose this segment for the First Aesthetic Marathon for following reason: As a child I always played here, I experienced this place, this serpent, these statues. But as an adult I found out that an artist made this serpent – Nicolina Assis, by the end of 19th, at the beginning of the 20th century. She inspired me to do a documentary film with the title «Mulheres Luminosas» [luminous women] in which we examine the integration of women in Brazilian art. Nicolina was a woman of the avant-garde, one of the first female Brazilian artists who created many works and sculptures. But today we have forgotten her, one doesn´t speak of her any more. The homage in form of the documentary film consists in remembering the pioneers who opened the way for today's artists. This is my homage. This serpent over there spits the water 30 metres and is wholly made of bronze and became quite renowned. One must thank Glaziou as well because he created many parks and asked Nicolina to do this sculpture. That´s it.
